U21 HURLING FINAL REPORT - (Number of times read: 575)
Derry Farr | Evening Echo | Wednesday 14 September 2011
Dohenys 2 – 9 St Marys 0 – 8
In a game dictated by the wind Dohenys picked up their second Clóna Milk sponsored South West U-21 B hurling title since 2008. At Newcestown on Saturday afternoon last the lads from Dunmanway got the better of their neighbours from Ballineen/Enniskeane in a final that carried with it a bonus of involvement in a county championship. Dohenys, who have a bye to the semi-final, will be hopeful of going all the way after this most recent display where they fielded without the services of Cork minor Darren Sweetnam.
Nevertheless they won comfortably a contest where the seeds of victory were sown in the first half. With the advantage of the strong wind they were 2-7 to 0-3 to the good and they then relied on their defence to do the business in the closing half. This they did with Cian Lynch and Tom Collins anchoring a unit cushioned by the strong play of midfielders David Collins and Maurice Murphy. This was particularly evident in the first half where a regular supply had Maurice Murphy, Donal Rice and Brendan McCarthy easing them three points clear in as many minutes after the start. It wasn’t all one way however as Peter Daly and Jason Collins emerged as Mary’s top players with Daly’s second point, a massive score from play, leaving just the minimum between the sides before the winner’s opening goal.
It was unlucky thirteen for the losers as a Brian O’Sullivan delivery from out near the touchline ended up in their net. Despite this setback and with John Daly and impressive ‘keeper Daniel Cronin showing up well Marys remained in touch until Dohenys served up a second goal in first half injury time. James Collins, who had earlier supplied a well taken point, was the player to finish the ball to the net following a pass from the influential Kevin O’Connell. The introduction of Gary Twomey and a reshuffle in their ranks enabled the loser’s to restart with a flurry of points but the goal they so desperately required never came allowing Dohenys march on to the county stages and with two strong additions to their ranks hopefully available for that outing who knows.
