The under
13 hurlers were very unlucky when losing their Championship final on Monday
night week last to a fine Kilbrittain side played in the superb Clonakilty
G.A.A grounds.
The final
score of 5-07 to 5-06 speaks for itself and for the large Sam Maguire support
it was indeed a night packed with drama and tension.
The game
was short on scores in the opening quarter and after 15 minutes Kilbrittain
lead 0-2 to 0-1 with Mark Buckley having opened the Sam Maguire account.
Then in a
matter of 2 minutes the Sam Maguires had scored 2 goals with the first coming
from a well struck ground shot from Cathal Kelly which was followed immediately
on the puck out with a long delivery from Eoin OSullivan going all the way to
the net. Indeed Sam Maguires could have
had a third shortly afterwards when Mark Buckley saw his well struck effort
from 20 metres go narrowly wide after a superb 50 metres burst.
At half
time Sam Maguires lead 2-04 to 1-04.
Early in
the second half Mark Buckley crashed a 20 metre free to the Kilbrittain net and
Sams held a 7 point lead.
Unfortunately,
The Kilbrittain lads responded quickly and scored 2 goals in as many minutes.
Sean Hudson
had 2 more goals for Sam Maguires in the second half but Kilbrittain responded
with like scores each time.
For the
last 15minutes the Kilbrittain team dominated and took a one lead into the
closing minutes. Mark Buckley had the
last effort on goal for Sam Maguires when his long range effort from play
drifted right and wide.
The team
can be very proud of their efforts in getting to the final and on their
brilliant display of hurling on the night.
