Under 12 Football

On Sunday the 17th May the Under 12 footballers travelled to Enniskeane to take on Clonakilty in the West Cork Final. This was always going to be an uphill battle as Clonakilty had been unbeaten all year recording very comprehensive victories on their path to the final.Playing against the wind in the first half Maguire’s found the going tough with Clonakilty piling on the pressure to race into a 1-4 to 0-0 lead after ten minutes despite some stout defending by Sean Hudson and great goalkeeping by Padraig Crowley. Despite trying their hearts out Maguire’s went into the break well behind a very strong and resilient Clonakilty outfit. Conditions deteriorated in the second half and despite the best efforts of Mark Buckley and Thomas White at centre field they just could not get enough ball into the forwards who were in turn well marshalled by a resolute Clonakilty defence. Although well beaten in the end the team can be proud of their achievements in getting to the final and with most of the players Under 12 again next year they can look forward to better days in the future.

On Saturday last the team travelled to Aghada to take on the locals in the county quarter final. On a very warm day for football the game turned out to be very entertaining and close fought encounter. Aghada took control early on and lead by 1-3 to 0-1 after the first quarter. After a great individual point by Mark Buckley the hosts responded with five unanswered points leaving Maguire’s with a mountain to climb approaching half time.

After the break Maguire’s upped their performance with points from Sean Hudson, Tomas White and two more from the impressive Mark Buckley helping to  reduce the hosts lead to a mere five points. Aghada then took control with two goals in quick succession pushing them into a 3-8 to 0-6 lead with fifteen minutes remaining. Maguire’s then piled on the pressure but found the Aghada goalkeeper in inspired form saving certain goals from the Tomas White and Cathal O Donavan. Two more points helped to reduce the arrears but Maguire’s could not rattle the Aghada net to bring them back into contention. Aghada finished the stronger with a further two goals putting paid to any Maguire fightback. Although well beaten in the end the team can well pleased with their efforts against a physically stronger Aghada team. The final score saw the hosts running out victors on a scoreline of 5-9 to 0-9.

Under 14 Hurling

The Sam Maguire under 14 hurlers played Ballinscarthy in the quarter final of the championship in Rossmore recently. Turning in a very impressive display of Hurling the team ran out winners on a score line of 2-9 to 1-2 having lead at the break by a seven point margin. This impressive performance was capped by some fine individual displays by Joseph O Sullivan in goal who was aided by the very solid Tom Murphy at full back. Others to impress were full forward Danny O Leary and Maurice Herlihy at corner forward who got to score of the match with a well taken point from the endline off his weaker left side.” Straight out of his granddads coaching manual”. The team had obviously benefited from a hard fought encounter the previous week in the league against Kilmeen where they eventually lost by a point on a scoreline of 2-12 to 2-11.

The next outing is at home to Ballineen next Tuesday night with throw in at 7.30pm.

Non Exam Football

The non exam footballers had a number of outings recently. The first of these was against Macroom where they lost by the narrowest of margins on a score line of 1-10 to 0-12. The second outing was away to Rosscarbery where the hosts defeated them on a score line of 3-9 to 1-4 with the goal coming from the boot of Declan Coughlan.

On Monday last they played Bandon and in the poorest display of the campaign so far they were defeated by 7-14 to 1-4.This game was notable for the debut of Nigerian born Zemen Abun in the Maguire’s jersey proving that Barry Herlihys worldwide scouting network is finally paying dividends for the Sam Maguire’s under age club.
