Sam Maguire G.A.A. Notes
Under 12 Hurling
The under 12 hurlers have been the most active under age team in the club in recent weeks playing numerous practice matches and training regularly.
In the past few week’s they travelled to both Ardfield and Ballinascarthy for friendly games and whilst they were well beaten in both there was plenty for the selectors to consider with many players pushing for a place on the championship team. Over the two games a total of 24 players took to the field.
On Wednesday night week last the team travelled to Kealkil to play Bantry in the quarter final of the championship and played their hearts out in a thrilling game which saw Maguire’s victorious on a scoreline of 1.09 to 1.02. The game was very close and only a point separated the teams at the break. Maguire’s stretched the lead to 3 points early in the second half only to be pegged back by a well worked Bantry goal midway through the half. To their credit the team raised their game and put 1.04 on the board in the last ten minutes to advance to a semi final meeting with Ballinascarthy. Whilst this was a marvellous team display, it was a joy to see Mark Buckley in full flow and contributing 1.06 of the total. The other scores came from the sticks of Sean Hudson (0.02) and Cathal Kelly (0.01).
In the semi final on Wednesday night last Maguire’s ground out a hard fought victory over Ballinascarthy on a scoreline of 0-06 to 1-02 to advance to the final against Diarmuid O Mathuna’s on Wednesday night next September 8th in Clonakilty with throw in at 6.15pm. The victory over Ballinascarthy was all the more impressive given the fact that the team had been soundly beaten in a challenge by the same team only weeks earlier. Great credit is due to the selectors for the time and effort being put in between organising training sessions and numerous challenge games to help improve the skills of the players involved and it’s good to see this hard work being rewarded with positive results on the pitch.

Under 16 Hurling
The Under 16 Hurlers defeated Ahan Gaels in the West Cork Championship C Grade final on Friday night last in Clonakilty in a hard fought encounter with the result in doubt right to the wire. The final scoreline of 2-11 to 1-09 leaving five points in it at the final whistle seems like a reasonably comfortable victory on paper but this was only secured with two late points from Maguire’s with the result in the balance right to the end. Maguire’s started brightly and for the first twenty minutes looked to be only team in it opening up a lead of 2-03 to 0-00 courtesy of two opportunistic goals from full forward Keith Daly. Ahan Gaels gradually fought their way back into the game leaving Maguire’s leading at half time on a scoreline of 2-05 to 1-04. The second half was nip and tuck right throughout with both sides cancelling each other out in a hard fought affair with Maguire’s glad to hold on at the end. John Forbes was presented with the trophy afterwards and he paid tribute to all involved particularly the selectors Dicky Forbes, Dave O Leary & Mary Lynch for the fantastic work they have put in with this team throughout the years. Best on the night for Maguires were Ross Crowley, Owen O Driscoll, Stephen O Driscoll & Keith Daly.
