DOHENYS IN MUNSTER FINAL - (Number of times read: 988)

Derry Farr | Monday 22 January 2007

Dohenys 0 – 7   Cappamore  0 – 4
It wasn’t pretty, in fact it was downright ugly at times, but the end result had a smile on the faces of the large Dunmanway contingent that travelled to Killeedy to witness a game in which Dohenys made history.  This victory has the Cork county champions now installed in a first ever Munster hurling final after this junior B provincial semi-final triumph.  In appalling conditions Dohenys faced the Limerick champions in a dour struggle where the winners displayed that little more craft but a dogged losers refused to yield, helped by the heavy going, made even heavier by the sleet and rain that fell throughout.
The seeds of victory were sown by Dohenys in the opening half when they faced the elements and a rugged Cappamore who failed to take advantage of the strong breeze.  The sides turned over on level terms with two early second half points from the winners giving them breathing space in an uncompromising contest where scores were at a premium.  The losers struck the first blow with a Shane Power point in the second minute but thereafter the Doheny defence excelled.  A dogged fullback division, fronted by a classy half back department where Johnny Collins, Denis Lyons and Johnny Collins hurled defiantly, surrounded goalkeeper Vincent Healy with a ring of steel and laid the foundations for a mighty triumph.  For the remainder of the game all Cappamore managed was just three more points, one after the break, while the winners themselves showed more consistency in attack.
Here wing forward Jerry McCarthy, along with team captain Denis Healy led the way with some well struck scores and his early brace of points inspired Dohenys who had Conor Collins, along with Keith Sheehan shading midfield.  John Charles and Daniel O’Donnell formed a solid Cappamore central defensive barrier while ‘keeper Seamus Coffey further aided their attack with some lengthy frees.  Up front however they suffered and early second half points from Denis Healy and Jerry McCarthy enabled Dohenys open up a slender lead.  There was a goal between them before Liam Hammersley slipped over the losers only second half score entering the closing quarter when Dohenys substitute David Crowley hit one of the best scores of the day to restore the status quo.  The remaining eleven minutes will be remembered for a Noel Collins goal line block, from a close in Liam Hammersley free, and several melees that had the game end on an unsavoury note. However nothing could take from an historic Dohenys triumph that has them awaiting the winners of the clash involving the Kerry and Tipperary champions in the decider.
