Co Premier 2 Minor Football Championship - Qtr/Final
Glanmire 1-16 Sam Maguires 1-09
30th August 2011
Sam Maguires tenure as champions came to a halt on Wednesday night last when in Ballinascarthy they bowed out of this season's Co Premier 2 Minor Football Championship at the hands of a talented Glanmire side.
All for the opening ten minutes, after which the sides were on level terms, Glanmire were in control of this game with Jeff Leopold, James O'Keeffe, Duncan Tsu, Killian Burke, David O'Brien and Dara O'Rourke always to the fore and although Sam Maguires defended to the last with battling displays from Kieran Daly, Maurice Murphy, Mark Quinn, Ross Crowley and Donal Rice it was not to be enough on this occasion as Glanmire advanced to meet Macroom in the Semi-Final.
Glanmire with wind advantage opened the scoring with a fine point from Killian Burke inside the first minute. A pointed free from Mark Quinn equalised for Sam Maguires before Duncan Tsu restored the "East Cork" sides advantage by the 5th minute. Five minutes later it was again all square with Quinn once more successful from a placed ball. Gradually a more workmanlike and
better balanced Glanmire side began to get a foothold on the game and with their forward division receiving some quality ball their dominance began to tell on the scoreboard. Two points apiece from David O'Brien and Dara O'Rourke and one from Joe Condon saw them race into a 0-07 to 0-03 lead by the 20th minute and already the warning signals were flashing for Sam Maguires. A third pointed free from Quinn kept the "Carbery" side in touch but a brace of points from O'Rourke saw Glanmire go in at the break leading 0-09 to 0-04 with Donal Rice getting the fourth point from Sam Maguires, which was their first from play, just before the interval.
On the resumption it was expected that Sam Maguire would put in a strong challenge when playing with wind advantage but it was the reverse in that Glanmire continued to take the game to their opponents and with well taken points from O'Brien and O'Rourke they increased their margin to seven points. A point from Donal Rice reduced the deficit but Glanmire were now playing with great confidence and confirmed their authority with points from O'Brien and Tsu and in the 45th minute they virtually killed this game as a contest when a great pass from Joe Condon found O'Brien in space and he made no mistake in crashing the ball to the net for a powerful goal to give them a 1-13 to 0-05 advantage. In fairness to Sam Maguires they did rally their forces and after a fine point from Quinn, who ended up their top marksman with 1-06 to his credit, they were thrown a lifeline when Rice was deemed to
have been fouled inside the area and from the resultant penalty Quinn gave them a healthier look on the scoreboard. Two points from Quinn and one from Maurice Murphy completed the scoring for Sam Maguires but in between their opponents also increased their tally courtesy of Tsu, O'Brien and O'Rourke to see them run out worthy winners on the final scoreline of 1-16 to 1-09 and book their place in the Semi-Finals.
