Doheny Juniors played Courcey Rovers last week and were delighed to secure a place in the West Cork Final. In an exciting game where Dohenys dominated for the most part and there were some strong individual performances, Dohenys excellent passing and goal scoring ability helped them to claim victory.

Dohenys were first to open the scoring, despite initial pressure from the Courcey forwards. However, Dohenys found their stride and settled into the game quite comfortably with busy bees Elaine Collins and Ciara O Riordain shooting over some lovely points before goal scoring supreme Aishling McCarthy booted the ball to the Courceys net. Trojan work was being done in midfield where Noelle Farr and Susan Collins collecting & releasing ball to the ever ready Doheny forwards.

Courceys looked dangerous when they managed to get through a tough Doheny defense where Clare Walsh and Claire Hurley were a force to be reckoned with. Courceys managed to score a point but Aileen Murphy retaliated by scoring a point of her own before the hardworking Ciara O Riordain blasted the ball to the back of the net.

Step in goalie Irene Mawe dusted off her goalie boots and made an excellent block before the break and was relieved when Courceys only managed to point the ball over the bar. The Doheny defense were working well and each and everyone must be commended for their hard work. Half time score read 2-4 to 0-2, a dream start but still work to be done.

Courceys refused to give up without a fight and after the break they looked dangerous as they tried to break through the Doheny defence. Not an easy task as the Dohenys backs helped Courceys to kick the ball wide. Fifteen minutes in, an example of Dohenys great passing game was displayed which was rewarded by an Aishling McCarthy goal. Catriona Maloney passed off a beauty of a ball to McCarthy, who passed to a waiting Linda O Connor, who returned the ball to the goal scorer to claim her second goal.It was a powerful display and beautifully executed.

Courceys retailated by shooting a goal of their own but this was soon forgotten as the Doheny forwards walzed in through the Courcey defense with another few points to help secure victory. Courceys must be commended their great character in keeping pressure on the Doheny defense and were successful in kicking over some fine scores and also scored from a free kick which was well placed between the Doheny posts. Dohenys hung on to their lead and can be proud of their teams effort in securing a place in the West Cork Final against the winners of Castlehaven V Kinsale.
Final Score: Dohenys  3-9 - Courcey Rovers 1-6.
