Dohenys overcome Mathúnas to book their place in Quarter Final

Dohenys 3-19 v 1-13 Diarmuid Ó Mathúnas

Dohenys advanced in the R.C.M Tarmacadam Carbery Junior A Hurling Championship with a good win over near-neighbours Diarmuid Ó Mathúnas. In a well turned-out Enniskeane- it was Mathúnas who settled better into the game and opened the scoring with a free from Patrick Crowley in the first minute. Dohenys responded well and following strong work by Barry O Donovan- Bill Murphy replied to the Mathúnas opener with a good Doheny point. Mathúnas dominated the opening exchanges and by the seventh minute had raced into a 0-3 to 0-1 point lead- the scores coming from William Horgan from play and another placed ball from Patrick Crowley. Bill Murphy responded with a Doheny free to bring the margin down to a point. Murphy’s placed ball heralded a flurry of scoring activity over a frantic five minute period prior to the first water-break. Seán Daly scored a good point for Dohenys on the 11th minute and the sides were level at three points apiece. It was then that Mathúnas got the first and their only goal of the game. Dohenys collectively failed to clear a ball launched into the danger zone and following a lucky hop, Mathúnas clinically dispatched the ball to the Doheny net. Unfazed by the concession of the early goal- Dohenys rallied strongly with Fionn Herlihy figuring prominently. Good points by the aforementioned Herlihy, Aidan O Donovan along with a free from Bill Murphy saw Dohenys recover quickly and the score at the First Water Break was level- Dohenys 0-6 v 1-3 Diarmuid Ó Mathúnas.

Following the resumption after the Sos Uisce, Dohenys upped their hurling further and took control of proceedings. The second quarter was a period where Dohenys exerted huge pressure on the Mathúnas goal- strong Doheny running and speed saw them take control of the game. Following great work from Mark Buckley, Fionn Herlihy scored an outstanding point. Herlihy’s point was followed up by a Bill Murphy free after corner forward Barry O’Donovan was upended by the sliding Mathúna’s goalkeeper at the edge of the parallelogram. Dohenys then grabbed two goals in quick succession- both coming from the stick of Barry O’Donovan. The first of Donovan’s goals was a rebound after a great save from Oisín O’Leary saw O’Donovan eventually shovel the ball over the Mathúnas goal-line. O’Donovan’s second goal was an emphatic strike to the roof of the Mathúna’s net following some great incisive play by Fionn Herlihy. Dohenys dominated the second quarter of the first half but their dominance was interspersed by Mathúnas points from Jamie Lucey and Patrick Crowley. During Dohenys dominance, Fionn Herlihy, Aidan O’Donovan, Mark Buckley and Bill Murphy were all to the fore contributing excellently to the Doheny effort. At the short- whistle Dohenys were in command and led by 2-9 to 1-5.

Dohenys continued to dominate in the second half- their first point a peach of a score from Fionn Herlihy following an excellent pin-point puck-out by Denis Dullea. As the third quarter progressed Johnny Kelly and substitute Darragh Collins got in the scoring act too for Dohenys. When Aidan O Donovan raised a green flag in the 40th minute, Dohenys had amassed a thirteen point lead. Credit to Mathúnas who despite the margin never threw in the towel. Mathúnas threatened the Doheny goal on a number of occasions in the second half and Dohenys had Tadhg O Leary to thank for blocking a goal bound Mathúna effort off the line. Good defending by the aforementioned O’Leary and the O’Farrell brothers ensured that Dohenys maintained their commanding lead throughout the second half. Mark Buckley finished the game in fine form for Dohenys rattling off their five last points- among them two excellent scores from play.
