Derry Farr | Evening Echo | Wednesday 1 February 2012

Dohenys 2 – 9 Newmarket 0 – 10

Making their first competitive appearance in County senior football ranks, Newmarket led Dohenys a merry dance in the early stages of this Tadhg Crowley Cup quarterfinal. Playing at home the winners found themselves trailing by 5 points after 20 minutes but a Jerry McCarthy goal, four minutes before the break helped them retire on level terms. It was the Dunmanway sides turn to get on top early after the resumption but this game wasn’t put to bed until their second goal, late on finally killed off a plucky Newmarket challenge.

It was Newmarket all the way early on with last year’s County Intermediate champions hell bent on making a good impression on this historic occasion. Lively fullforward Nicky Flanagan had them ahead inside 2 minutes and already gaps were appearing in the winner’s fullback line in particular. Flanagan along with TJ Bodie and Seán Francis O’Connor, before he was forced off injured, lapped up a healthy supply from midfielders Colin O’Sullivan and David O’Flynn while Denis O’Brien and TJ Brosnan looked the part in a tenacious defence.

With the scores flowing, including a beauty from wingback Brosnan, the losers deservedly eased 0-7 to 0-2 clear with Doheny’s only reply being two converted Alan Sheehan frees. Their opening score from play came from Stephen Collins just a minute before the turning point in the game, two minutes before halftime. It all began with Killian Crowley tearing out of defence to set in motion a move that ended with Alan Sheehan placing Jerry McCarthy whose close in effort wound up in the net despite a desperate Niall O’Connor attempt at saving. With Sheehan levelling matters before the interval a restructured Dohenys restarted with a point from the boot of substitute Declan O’Dwyer but the best move the winning selectors made was in bringing Tom Collins back into the corner back slot.

He went on to produce a classic last thirty minutes while Tadhg O’Leary and David Collins also improved in a defence strengthened by the inclusion of Johnny Collins. Pat Collins came on to improve matters in the winner’s midfield sector where Timmy O’Donovan turned in a solid shift while up front Stevie Collins finally got his forwards moving. They forged 3 points clear before getting a scare when Nicky Flanagan opted to take his point with a goal at his mercy enabling Dohenys hold on to their lead before Declan O’Dwyer placed Alan Sheehan for the late goal that finally killed off a vibrant Newmarket.
