DOHENYS V KILBRITTAIN REPORT - (Number of times read: 3608)

Derry Farr | Evening Echo | Tuesday 2 August 2011

Dohenys   2 – 15
Kilbrittain  1 – 11

Dohenys confirmed their status as one of the top four in this year’s Kinetica sponsored South West JAHC encounter at Clon.  Against a doughty Kilbrittain’s second team their play at times was a delight to watch but an impressive final tally was blighted by 15 shots off target and a defensive setup that will need more tweaking before they become a done deal.  In the early stages of the second half in particular the black and ambers applied a lot of pressure and only for some last ditch defensive play, plus one top class save from goalie Vincent Healy prevented the loser’s from bagging a goal that might well have tightened up matters considerably.

At the other end Doheny’s also could have added to their goals tally but Terry O’Regan excelled in the winner’s goal where an incident containing three close in efforts yielded the winners nothing.  When in trouble Dohenys were fortunate that late arrival Darren Sweetnam settled them with two pointed sixty five’s but the winners will also be pleased by the way they performed for forty minutes without their Cork Minor talisman.  With Jack O’Connor, Brian O’Sullivan along with Denis Healy all conspicuous in attack they had a 2-7 to 1-3 lead at the break.  The hard working Conor Collins was set up by O’Connell for their opening goal in the 11th minute but three minutes later the loser’s top man in attack Eamon Lyons availed of terrible Doheny defensive play to score their only goal.

With Seamus O’Brien, Thomas Harrington and Fintan O’Connell also doing well up front Kilbrittain remained in touch until a flowing move started by Tom Collins ended with top man Denis Healy waltzing through for Dohenys second goal.

Just before the break Eamon Lyons almost netted for a second time but was just inches wide leaving Dohenys 7 points to the good at the interval.  For the opening twenty minutes of the closing half it was nick and tuck and there were just 4 points separating the sides before Sweetnam converted two crucial sixty-fives to steady the winners who now face Bandon, Bal or Colums in the semi-final.
