DOHENYS NOTES - (Number of times read: 834)

PRO & James McCarthy | Wednesday 27 February 2019

The Doheny Junior A Footballers finally opened their League campaign with a good win against Ilen Rovers in Rath, Baltimore on Sunday last.

A great team performance ensured Dohenys ran-out winners by 1-8 to 1-6.

Dohenys started slowly- but an excellently taken goal by Aidan O Donovan settled the team. The goal-scorer bravely flicking the ball over the on-rushing Ilen Rovers Goalkeeper after a well worked Doheny move.

The goal was followed by another great Doheny passage of play- strong interplay and quick movement of the ball saw corner back Alan Murray get his name on the scoresheet.

The victory was grounded in defence where Tadhg Leary and Keith Forbes defended strongly. Wing-back Jason Daly was the stand-out performer- getting out in front of his man, winning hopeless balls and constantly stifling Ilen’s attacks. Padraig Mahony in the middle of the field also got through a whole pile of work.

Deputy Goalkeeper Ray Jennings was composed throughout. Jamie Carroll and Gareth Crowley kicked some fine scores from play while Kieran Forbes’ movement up-front served as great outlet for Doheny attacks.

Dohenys led by five points coming into the closing minutes of the game but a fortuitous Ilen Rovers goal led to a tense ending. Some wasteful Ilen shooting and great resolute Doheny defending led to Dohenys leaving Baltimore with the two league points.
