CIAN O’MAHONY’S injury-time equaliser earned Bandon a draw from the jaws of defeat in their Bon Secours Cork SAFC Group C local derby with Dohenys in Ahiohill on Sunday.
Leading 0-11 to 0-8 with seven minutes remaining, Bandon failed to close down Mark Buckley and the Dunmanway club’s forward made them pay. Three consecutive points (one free) made 0-11 apiece as time ticked the final whistle.
Another Buckley effort (his fourth) edged Dohenys in front and had their supporters punching the air. Yet, the
lilywhites had one final sting in their tail and Cian O’Mahony embarked on a run down the left wing.
The Bandon forward still had plenty to do but managed to fire over his side’s 12th point and level the score for an eighth time. There wasn’t enough time for Dohenys to mount another late comeback and the West Cork rivals had to settle for a share of the spoils.
Bandon led 0-6 to 0-5 at the conclusion of an even opening half in which Keith White, Fionn Herlihy and Cathal Daly accounted for Dunmanway’s scores. Barry Collins, Darren Crowley, Mark Sugrue and Cian O’Mahony found their range for Bandon ahead of a scrappy third quarter that ended with the teams level 0-8 to 0-8.
A couple of Ronan Crowley scores plus a Darren Crowley effort looked to have earned Bandon their second group win in a row. Mark Buckley had other ideas however, and punished a Bandon side that kicked 10 wides.
Four Buckley scores without replay turned a 3-point
deficit into a 1-point lead as time ticked down. Bandon refused to buckle under pressure and Cian O’Mahony kicked over a superb late equaliser to earn the lilywhites a point.
It is still all to play for in group C of the Cork SAFC. Next up for Dohenys is a must-win game against Clyda Rovers while Bandon face an ominous task against Fermoy.
