DOHENY LADIES LOSE OUT IN FINAL - (Number of times read: 683)

A sharper and hungrier Caheragh side defeated Dohenys in the South West Junior Final on Saturday evening last. Dohenys had started without their centre forward Ciara O Riordain, who they lost to an ankle injury at training, this and the fact that Caheragh were able to convert scores from play, gave them the edge over Dohenys.
Dohenys struggled to get the ball into their forwards, but when they did, Catriona Maloney looked dangerous and was unluckly to have been denied a goal by the Caheragh keeper. Aishling Mac scored two points from play but was unusually quiet up front. In the backs, Michelle Cronin had a good first half with Claire Walsh and Claire Hurley clearing ball away from danger. Caheragh's free taking was impeccable where Dohenys struggled to convert their frees to scores. This helped Caheragh gain momentum and with five mins to go in the first half, they kicked over three consecutive points as they walzed through the Doheny defense.
After the break, Caheragh held their lead throughout and never allowed Dohenys to settle into the game. Some fine scores from Elaine Collins and Noelle Farr and some great work by Irene Mawe in centre forward position, helped the girls to close the gap on their rivals. Claire Hurley came from centre back in the last few minutes to boost the Dunmanway side but it was too little too late, and the girls had to conceed victory to a deserving Caheragh side. Final score: Dohenys 0-9 to Caheragh 0-14. Scorers for Dohenys: C Maloney 0-3, N.Farr 0-2, A.McCarthy 0-2, E.Collins 0-1, C.Hurley 0-1.
Thanks to all for their support at the game and also for supporting their fundraiser in Gatsbys which was well attended and a great success. It was refreshing to see some "oldies" on the dance floor and we thank them for staying up late and shaking some moves on the dance floor!
The u10 girls are taking part in a blitz this Saturday, as part of the Sam Maguire Festival activities, with Bantry and Rosscarbery providing the opposition and we hope they have an enjoyable day.
