Playing Activities:
It was a much more spirited championship performance by the senior footballers compared to the 1st round showing but unfortunately the Dohenys men lost to St. Nicks by a mere point on a scoreline of 1-09 to 1-08 in the 2nd round of the Senior Football Championship in Kilmurray on Saturday evening last. Dohenys started brightly and were on the score-sheet early with a fine point from Brian McCarthy.  Dohenys looked in control early on with further points from David Collins & Niall Hurley but the loss of Pat Collins due to injury and positional changes made by St. Nicks gave the city side a strangle hold around the middle third of the pitch.  Dohenys struggled to win primary possession and St. Nicks drove forward to surge into a 6 point lead.  St. Nicks goal was very fortuitous, a 45 yard free which dropped under the crossbar.  Credit to the Dohenys they finished the 1st half strongly with points from the boot of Marky Quinn and corner back Sean Daly to reduce the deficit at halftime, 1-07 to 0-05.  St. Nicks registered the first score of the second half but failed to score again for a further 23 minutes.  Dohenys pushed forward against a very dogged Nicks defence and steadily chipped away at the Nicks lead with points coming courtesy of Alan Sheehan and Marky Quinn.  Great link up play by the Dohenys forward unit set up Denis Healy who rifled his shot past the despairing St. Nicks keeper, reducing the City sides lead to a point.  St. Nicks responded with a point of their own to extend their lead to 2 points.  Brian McCarthy kicked another fine point in the closing stages to reduce the deficit again.  Dohenys had opportunities to level matters and send the game into extra time but a lack of composure in front of goal cost the men in green.  The Dunmanway men have one more opportunity to keep alive their senior championship campaign and will face Newcestown in the next round.
