Doheny G.A.A Notes
The past weekend has been a very busy one for the club. The senior footballers recorded their second win in a row in the Kelleher Shield when they recorded a very creditable win over neighbours Carbery Rangers on Sunday last. The game was played in the club’s newly laid out second pitch which was in remarkable condition for this time of the year considering the amount of rain we had over the past fortnight. Dohenys played against a stiff breeze in the first half. Defences were on top in this half with the Doheny defence in particular in mean mood. A great goal by Jack O Connell midway through this half was the difference between the teams at half time. The score at the short whistle was 1-3 to 0-3 in favour of Dohenys. The second half was again a very close affair. A goal midway through this half brought Carbery Rangers right back into the match. However the concession of a penalty which was expertly put away by centre back Alan Sheehan gave Dohenys the goal advantage again. Points were exchanged in the closing minutes but two unanswered points from Dohenys towards the end sealed victory for the home side. Final score was Dohenys 2-6, Carbery Rangers 1-5. Team : Darragh Farr, Killian Crowley, Conor Collins, Daniel O Donovan, Maurice Murphy, Alan Sheehan(1gl.2pts.), David Collins, Micheal Farr, Michael Milner, Pat Collins, Stephen Collins, Brian McCarthy(2pts), Jack O Connell(1goal), Jer. McCarthy(2pts.), Patrick McCarthy. Subs. Cian lynch, Daniel Sweeney.
The Junior 1 team played two matches during the past week. On Tuesday night they played neighbours Clanna Gael in a friendly. Feature of this game was the large number of players who attended on the night. While Dohenys won well what mattered was that all the panel got some match practice throughout the game. On Friday night they took on Ilen Rovers in their first league match. The game was played in Sam Maguire Park under lights. This was a game that Dohenys were in control of and should have the points wrapped up well before the final whistle. However as the team visibly tired towards the end a fitter Ilen Rovers outfit finished the match strongly and snatched victory by a point when they scored a goal with the last kick of the game. The first half of this game belonged to Dohenys. A goal and 3 points from the excellent Mark Quinn and a point apiece from Jeremy Moloney and Barry o Donovan saw them lead at half time by 1-7 to 4points. The second half saw Ilen Rovers come back strongly into the match. Dohenys only added 2 points to their half time tally. It seemed that Dohenys had weathered the storm only for Ilen to snatch victory with time almost up with a rather fortuitous goal. Final score : Dohenys 1-9, Ilen rovers 1-10. Team ; Pierce O Brien, James McCarthy, Paudie murray, Fachtna McCarthy, Cian Lynch, Noel Collins, Johnny Collins, James Collins, Niall Hurley, Barry O Donovan (1pt.) Stephen Collins , Declan Dwyer, David Mawe (1pt.) Jeremy Moloney ( 1pt.), Mark Quinn ( 1-6) . Subs. Diarmuid Crowley, David O Brien, Rory Doyle.
There will be an Irish night in the G.A.A. Pavillion on St.Patricks Eve Wednesday March 16th. at 9.00pm.
