Doheny G.A.A.Notes
The last adult football team made their exit from championship football on Saturday last when the Junior 4 team were beaten by Clonakilty in the semi-final. They were always going to be up against it in this match as the loss of a number of players to teams in a higher grades proved too much. Dohenys played against a strong breeze in the first half and did well to be only 5 points behind at half time when the score stood at 1-3 to 1pt. The second half was a fairly even affair with both teams scoring 4pts. The final score of 1-7 to 5pts. in favour of Clonakilty shows how much the defences on both teams were dominant. Brendan Lehane had a great game and brought off some fine saves during the match. William O Brien and Micheal O Leary were to the fore in a Dohenys backline that more than held their own against the Clon. forwards. Sean Hayes had his moments in midfield. The forwards failed to avail of the many scoring opportunities that came their way in the second half. Even though they were beaten in the end the selectors are to be commended for the great effort they put into this team over the past two months. Team : Brendan Lehane, Barry O Donovan, Cathal Kelleher, Diarmuid Crowley, Micheal O Leary, William O Brien, Fachtna Collins, Sean Hayes, Matt Sanderson, Alan Ring, Clinton Sweetnam, Kieran Daly, Jeremy Moloney, Johnny Hurley and David Mawe. Subs: David Deane, Conor Hurley.
The Junior hurlers are fixed to play Ballinascarthy in the semi final of the championship on Monday night next at 6.15pm. The game will be played in Castletownkenneigh. They had a good win over Clonakilty in the last match but that was over 6 weeks ago. The team deserves our support and even though the time of the game is awkward for some people every effort should be made by our supporters to attend the match.
This year the club are taking over the running of the Sam Maguire weekend. It will begin on Friday September 10th. with a parade of schools sporting the colours of all thirty two counties and the weekend will be opened by former great Cork and Castlehaven player Niall Cahalane. An Irish night will be held in the Pavillion that night. On Saturday the annual Sam Maguire under age blitzes will be held and if the past few years are anything to go by we are in for a feast of football throughout the day. A barbeque will follow later that night with a famous guest providing the music. More detailed information on other activities during the weekend will be available in next week’s notes. The weekend should whet the appetite for the All Ireland final the following weekend which sees Cork and Down contest a final for the first time. All applications for tickets should be with the Runai Daniel O Donovan by Friday 10th. September. As the demand for tickets will be high no late applications will be accepted.
The Sam Maguire Under 16 hurlers had a fine win over Clonakilty on Friday night last in the semi final of the championship. The team were slow to settle and with defences on top on both sides during the first half the scores were hard to come by. The teams were level at 4 points a piece at half time. The second half saw a transformation in the Sam Maguire team. Goals from Mathew Lavers and Donal Rice saw Maguires build up a good lead with ten minutes left. The final score of 2-10 to 5pts. reflects the dominance of Sam Maguires in that second half. They now meet Ahan Gaels in the final. This game will be played on Friday next in Clonakilty at 6.30 pm. Your support for these young players would be greatly appreciated.
