Doheny G.A.A. Notes

Over the past two weeks a number of teams have been in championship action with mixed results. The Junior A Footballers played their quarterfinal game against Gabriels. They were always going to find it difficult to make further progress in this championship having lost so many players to the senior squad since the beginning of the year. Dohenys started brightly in this game with Kevin O Connell finding the net following a good move involving James Collins and Mark Quinn. However Gabriels settled as the first half progressed and dominated the remainder of the first half to lead by four points at the break. Indeed Dohenys Mark Quinn was unlucky not to score another major before half time as his shot at goal went narrowly wide. Dohenys resumed after half time and quickly reduced the lead to two points from a free by Mark Quinn and a long range effort from James Collins. However  the departure of Jack O Connell through injury and the dismissal of Declan  Dwyer following a second yellow card handed the initiative to Gabriels who proceeded to open up a 6 point lead with a quarter of an hour left. To their credit Dohenys reduced the gap again to three points following two good points from Daniel McSweeney and one from Brian O Sullivan. However Gabriels took over in the last ten minutes and added a number of points to claim victory. Final score Gabriels 1-12 to Dohenys 1-5. Team ; Aidan O Sullivan, James McCarthy, Paudie Murray, Fachtna McCarthy, Barry O Donovan, Paul Deane, Johnny Collins, James Collins, Brian O Sullivan, Daniel McSeweeney, Jack O Connell, Declan Dwyer, Kevin o Connell, Donncha Deasy, Mark Quinn. The Under 21 hurlers opened their championship campaign on Monday night last when they had a good win over Ardfield  in Rossmore. Fielding without the services of Cork Minor Darren Sweetnam they appeared very sluggish in the first half and were 5 points in arrears at half time when the score stood at 2-6 to 0-7 in favour of Ardfield. However they seemed to awaken from their slumbers in the second half and ran out easy winners in the end on a scoreline of 1-17 to 2-7. They now play Ballinascarthy in the semi final on Tuesday next August 31st . Team. : Liam Murphy, Maurice Murphy, Conor Cronin, Micheal o Leary, Cian Lynch, David Collins, Barry O Donovan, Alan Sheehan, Kevin O Connell, Daniel McSweeney, Jack O Connell, Brian O Sullivan, John Healy, James Collins , Jeremy Moloney. On the underage front Sam Maguire Minor Footballers took on Eire Og in the first round of the championship on Saturday night last in Cloughduv. This was a good open game of football Kevin O Connell got Maguires off the mark with a point. The next 18 minutes was a very low scoring affair and at that stage Sam Maguires held a slender 2 point lead. However the final 10 minutes saw Eire Og score from a penalty. In the last minute of the first half Midfielder Matt Sanderson set up Jack O Connell for a decisive goal to leave the half time score at 1-6 to 1-1 in favour of Maguires at half time. On the resumption Brendan McCarthy scored a well taken point and two further points from frees from the boot of Kevin O Connell stretched the lead to 7 points (1-9 to 1-2 )with fifteen minutes left. However Eire Og introduced Cork Minor Kevin  Hallissey and he brought Eire Og right back into the game. The deficit was reduced to 4 points with five minutes remaining when the O Connell brothers combined for a superb goal which was finished to the net by Jack. A superb save by Aidan O Sullivan shortly afterwards prevented Eire Og coming back into the game for a second time. An injury time goal from Kevin O Connell put the icing on the cake to leave the final score Sam Maguires 3-9 Eire Og 1-6.Scorers : Jack OConnell 2gls.
