Doheny G.A.A. Notes

The past week has been a very busy one for the club. On Wednesday night last the Seniors opened their league campaign with a good win over Naomh Abán. The first half was very competitive and exchanges were quite close. A goal from the boot of sharpshooter Ger McCarthy was vital in that it gave Dohenys a 4 point cushion at half time. He also added five more points from frees in that half in addition to a point each from Jerry McCarthy and Donal O Sullivan to give Dohenys a 1 gl. 7pts to Naomh Abán 6pts. lead at half time. The second half saw Dohenys play some delightful football during the first half . A well worked move which began in the backline saw Daniel O Donovan finish a great movement to the net to put the game beyond their opponents. This half also saw some delightful points being scored by Patrick McCarthy as he showed a welcome return to form. He  notched three points  with  the  irreprehensible Jer. McCarthy scoring a further three points 3pts and Denis Healy adding another to leave the final score Dohenys 2gls.14pts Naomh Abán 10 pts. This was a very encouraging display especially from the forward line. Five subs were introduced in the final ten minutes and all five acquitted themselves well. Team Darren Kelly,Alan Murray, Conor Collins, Killian Crowley, Alan Sheehan, Micheál O Donovan, Noel Collins, Michael Milner, Timmy O Donovan, Patrick McCarthy,(3pts.) Jer.McCarthy(1gl.8pts.), Donal O Sullivan(1pt.), Jerry McCarthy(1pt.), Daniel O Donovan(1.gl.), Denis Healy (1pt.). Subs: Micheál Farr, Johnny Collins, Cian Lynch, Brian McCarthy, James Collins.

On Friday the Junior footballers played their second League game with a home game against Bantry. After losing to Carbery Rangers in their first game a win was vital for this team. They proceeded to dominate this game from start to finish and won comfortably in the end. The back line were very solid all through with Paudie Murray ,Fachtna McCarthy and Noel Collins showing well  and showing their experience throughout the game. Brian McCarthy, Daniel O Donovan and Conor Hurley were the pick of the forward line. Top scorer on the night was Daniel O Donovan with a tally of 1goal and three points while Conor Hurley with three points and Brian McCarthy with three converted frees were the main marksmen. Points from Noel Collins, Donal O Sullivan and Barry O Donovan left the final score at Dohenys 1gl.12points to Bantry’s 7pts. This team has another league match on Saturday night but details are not yet available. Team Darren Kelly, Fachtna McCarthy, Paudie Murray, Clement Deane, Killian Crowley, Noel Collins, and Johnny Collins, James Collins, Donal o Sullivan, Cian Lynch, Brian McCarthy, Declan Dwyer,Fachtna McCarthy, Daniel O Donovan, and Conor Hurley. The senior team played their second league match on Sunday away to St.Vincents. Unlike their first game against Naomh Abán this was a dour encounter with the bitingly cold easterly wind not helping matters. Dohenys found it very difficult to get any sort of a  rhythm  going in the first half and gave away some easy frees. At half time Dohenys were 1 pt. ahead 5pts.to 4pts. The second half saw an improvement in the standard of the game and at the end Dohenys were ahead on the score of 1gl.11pts St.Vincents 7pts.  Dohenys chief marksman was again Ger.McCarthy scoring 6 points (five from frees) . Denis Healy took his goal well. Brian McCarthy kept it in the family when he came on for his brother and took over the free taking duties and contributed 2 points to the final tally. Donal O Sullivan with 2 pts and Daniel O Donovan with 1 pt. completed the scoring. This was a workmanlike performance from Dohenys as they continue their unbeaten run. This will indeed be put to the test on Sunday next when they take on newly crowned Tadhg Crowley cup winners Carbery Rangers in their third game. This game is fixed for Sam Maguire Park at 3.00 pm. However check locally as this is subject to change.  Team: Darragh  Farr, Fachtna McCarthy, Conor Collins, Killian Crowley, David Collins, Micheál O Donovan, Noel Collins, Micheál Farr, Timmy O Donovan, Donal O Sullivan, Jer. Sam Maguire Minor footballers made the long Journey to Mallow on Sunday evening .Despite being short a few of their regulars Sam Maguires went ahead in the first half and were 3 points ahead . Mallow clawed their way back into the game with a string of points and the sides were level at half time at 6points apiece. The second half saw Sam Maguires go into an early lead when a rather fortuitous goal brought Mallow back into the game . The stronger Mallow outfit prevailed in the end. The final score was Mallow 2gls. 9pts. Sam Maguires 12 pts. This was a good team effort . Aidan O Sullivan played well in goal while Donal Rice, Declan Coughlan, Mark Quinn, Brendan McCarthy and Daniel McSweeney were prominent throughout the game.
