DOHENY GAA NOTES - (Number of times read: 1022)

Eddie Moloney | Monday 8 February 2010

The past week has seen a resumption of the playing activities in the club. The senior team were in action in the first round of the Tadhg Crowley Cup on Friday night last. The game had to be transferred at short notice to Castlehaven due to the heavy rainfall during the day. The club regrets any inconvenience caused due to the late transfer of this fixture. The game itself was a typical early season affair. Dohenys were playing their first game since September last while Castlehaven’s involvement in the U.21 Duhallow tournament gave the home side a distinct advantage. Nevertheless the team performed well at intervals during the game but the superior fitness and match practice of their opponents proved vital in the end. Final score :Castlehaven 1gl.13pts. Dohenys 0gl. 10pts.There was a good turnout of players for the game. Darren Kelly was very impressive in goal. In the backline Alan Sheehan and Alan Murray were prominent .Pat Collins had his moments in midfield while Patrick and Ger McCarthy showed good form in the forwards. Scorers: Ger McCarthy 5pts., Patrick McCarthy 3pts. Denis Healy 1pt. And Donal O Sullivan 1pt. Team ; Darren Kelly, Conor Collins, Michael O Donovan, Alan Murray, Timmy O Donovan, David Collins, Alan Sheehan, Michael Milner, Pat Collins, Donal O Sullivan, Patrick McCarthy, Denis Healy, Jerry McCarthy, James Collins, Ger McCarthy.  Subs; Brian McCarthy, Tadhg O Leary, Daniel O Donovan, Johnny Collins.  They now play St. Finbarrs at home next weekend  in the Plate competition. Naomh Aban got the better of Barrs last weekend.
The U.21 Footballers played a challenge game on Sunday morning against St.Marys. Even though they were short a number of vital players due to a variety of reasons the game was a worthwhile experience as they prepare for their championship game in March. It is hoped to organize a few more challenge games for this team during the coming weeks.

The social committee are organizing a reunion of the very successful U.21 football team of 1969-1971  in the near future. They completed 3 in a row during these years . It is also hoped to honour the 1965 team that reached the final against Clonakilty but was never played. The  names of the players being honoured and details of the function will follow later.

The clubs Lotto Jackpot of 1200 euro was not won. The numbers drawn were 25, 17, 33. Winners of 50 euro consolation prizes were John Coakley, Lakeview, Padraig O Mahony, Neaskin and Liz. McCarthy Main St.. Next weeks jackpot will be for 1400 euro and will be held in the Pavillion on Sunday night.
