The Doheny Senior football team were in action in a backdoor game on Saturday evening last. This game never fulfilled the great expectations of some west Cork derbies that we had seen in the past. Ilen rovers opened the score with a great point from their Cork minor Dan McEoin.

Doheny’s were playing against the strong wind and found it difficult to come to terms with their own kick outs. When they moved the ball up the field they lost position on numerous occasions by bring the ball into contact and taking the wrong options at times. Further points by Kevin O’ Sullivan and Alan Holland made the score 4pts to 1pt after 15minutes.

Doheny’s were relying on frees from Jerry McCarthy to keep the scoreboard ticking over who defiantly our best forward on display. On the 25th minute Ilen Rovers scored a goal and this gave them a comfortable lead going into half time. Ilen Rovers 1-7 Doheny’s 4pts. Doheny’s dug deep in the second half and brought the lead back to 1-8 to 7pts going into the last quarter. Doheny’s had missed opportunities in scoring a couple of goals; it wasn’t to be on the night. Doheny’s now play St. Nick’s on Sunday in Bandon at 7:00!

Doheny’s: Darragh Farr, Conor Collins, Michael O’ Donavan, Cillian Crowley, Tom Collins, Timmy O’ Donavan, David Collins, Pat Collins, Donal O’ Sullivan, Micheal Milner (captain), Stephen Collins, Denis Healy, Jack O’ Connell, Daniel O’ Donavan, Jerry McCarthy.  Sub: Patrick McCarthy

Sam Maguire

The U10 footballers played Clonakilty last Saturday. As usually this was a very even contest with Sam Maguire’s winning out in the finish. They also played Nemo Rangers in the past week at home. With the experience these young players are getting things will be looking up for the future.

U11 hurlers played Kilbree on Friday evening. This team is making huge progress with the skills of the game.

U14 footballers played Bantry in a league game. They were out of their dept for long periods of the first half but with the introduction of Kevin Murphy and co. at half time they put on an excellent display and pushed Bantry to the final whistle getting some great scores.

The Minor footballers start their championship campaign on Friday night in Ballinascarthy on Friday night at 7:00pm, their opponent is Kinsale. These lads gave great value for money last year win the County Premier 2. We all wish the players and their mentors the best of luck.
