Doheny G.A.A Notes
Dohenys bridged a 35 year gap on Monday night last when they qualified for the West Cork Junior A Hurling Final by virtue of a 2-14 to 1-12 win over Ballinascarthy . This was a great display by Doheny hurlers and sets up a mouth watering Final on Sunday next against neighbours D.O Mathuna in Enniskeane at 4.00 pm. Dohenys started this game in whirlwind fashion. They dominated that first half and were full value for their 1-8 to 6 pts. lead at half time. A superb goal from Cork Minor Darren Sweetnam and some lovely point scoring by Darren and a long range effort from Donal O Sullivan helped Dohenys to a 5point lead at half time. They again dominated the first 10 minutes of the second half. Points from Jerry McCarthy, Darren Sweetnam and Patrick McCarthy extended the lead to 8 points. The decisive moment came when a superb movement up the field saw Darren rattle the net from close range. The remainder of the half saw Ballinascarthy make a comeback. The concession of some easy frees narrowed the gap somewhat but Dohenys held out for a well merited 5point win. Dohenys will enter this final as underdogs against a more experienced Mathuna fifteen but if they can replicate the form they showed in the semi-final they will have every chance of winning a first title at this level since 1963. Your support is vital for this the biggest day for hurling in the club for 47 years. Team: Vincent Healy, Fachtna McCarthy, Killian Crowley, Clement Deane, Cian Lynch, Tadhg O Leary, David Collins, Alan Sheehan(ipt.), Noel Collins, Jerry McCarthy(1pt.), Patrick McCarthy(1pt.), Donal O Sullivan(2pts.), Denis Healy, Darren Sweetnam(2-9), Denis Cronin. Subs. Pat Collins, Brian O Sullivan, Stephen Collins.
The under 21 hurlers were well beaten in the Under 21B hurling championship by the same opposition on Tuesday of last week. Short seven of the team that started against Ardfield they were always going to find it difficult with such a weakened team.
The Sam Maguire weekend is being held this coming weekend and a big list of events has been organized. A parade of players sporting the colours of the 32 counties will precede the opening by Niall Cahalane . A series of blitzes will be held on Saturday in Sam Maguire Park. Many more events including an Irish night on Friday night and a dance on Saturday night are being held in the Pavillion. A full Programme of events are available in all local shops.
It was also a great weekend for hurling at under age level with the Under16 team capturing a West Cork title and the Under 12 hurlers qualifying for a divisional final.Well done to all concerned.
