GOLF CLASSIC WINNERS
MICHAEL DINEEN, PATRICK O' DONOVAN, JOHN O' DRISCOLL
GOLF CLASSIC
The club’s annual golf classic took place in Skibbereen Golf Club on Saturday last and once again proved very successful from both a financial and an enjoyment point of view. This was due in no small measure to the fine support it got from sponsors and players. The day was ideal for golf and the course in immaculate condition which was reflected in the high scoring with 58 points taking top prize and 31 of the 45 teams recording 50 points or more. Golfers from many different clubs took part including Bandon, Bantry, kinsale, Dunmore, Kenmare, Castletownbere, Lee Valley, Tralee, Raffeen Creek, Cork and Monkstown. The club is appreciative of the fact that many teams turnout year after year to support the event including Charlie Mc Carthy’s team from Skibbereen and Anthony Mc Carthy’s team from Kenmare.
The presentation of prizes brought a large crowd to Gallys that night where club chairman, Jerry O’ Mahony, thanked all who had supported the event and the sub-committee that had organised it. He stressed the importance of the event as a fund raiser for both the Dohenys and Sam Maguire clubs. Before announcing the results Raymond Lyons, chairman of the organising committee, first of all thanked the players who had participated and without whom the event could not take place. He paid a special tribute to the 45 casual golfers who supported the event. He said that what helped to make the event so enjoyable was the hospitality provided by the staff of the Skibbereen Golf club. He paid tribute to the main sponsors who included the Bank of Ireland; Jack Collins & Sons, Building Contractors, Healy’s Super Valu; O’ Connell’s Supermarket and John F. Supple Ltd, Cork. The club was also very appreciative of the many other sponsors who sponsored tee-boxes and prizes as without the generosity of sponsors the event would not be viable. He thanked the lady members of the club, Caitriona Murphy, Catherine O’ Donovan, Mary Maybury and Caroline Mc Carthy for their work during the day. Finally he complimented his fellow committee members on their work over the past few months. These included Cathal Crowley, Gerard Galvin, Catherine O’ Donovan, Barry Herlihy, Dr. Michael Herlihy, Eddie Moloney, Brendan O’ Rourke and Declan Lavers, the latter having done a fine job in putting together the timesheet. He wished Brendan O’ Rourke, who missed the event due to an operation, a speedy recovery and also asked the gathering to remember the late Diarmuid Mawe who had set out with them in organising the event.

MINOR FOOTBALL
Pride of place this week goes to the minor footballers who staged a remarkable recovery to defeat St. Vincents in Macroom on Tuesday evening to win the final of the non – exam league. Having lost a 7 point lead they trailed by 4 with only 10 minutes to go against an impressive Vincents side that was playing with the elements to their backs. Maguires looked to be dead only to be buried but like Lazarus they staged a remarkable comeback to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat.
Conditions for the game were rather miserable with wind and rain blowing from the golf course end. Although they favoured Maguires in the first half it was the city side that seized the early initiative. They opened the scoring with a point in the opening minute and within another minute had the ball in Maguire’s net as a rebound off the upright was mishandled by the backs and Vincents took full advantage. Maguires, however, were not rattled by this setback as they proceeded to dominate much of the first half and opened up a 7 point lead by half time. Three points from Ger Lynch and one from Brian O’ Sullivan were followed by a goal from a penalty from Aidan Hurley after his first attempt was saved. This trend continued for the remainder of the half with the backs well in control and Tom Collins dominating the midfield area. Collins , Lynch and Hurley kicked further points before Lynch goaled after a fine run by Jeremy Moloney. The half time whistle saw Maguires comfortably ahead on a score of 2-7 to 1-3.
From the throw-in in the second half Vincents took a firm grip on the game, their strong running causing many problems for the Maguires backs. They were level by the 10th minute and four points ahead by the twentieth while Maguires struggled to get the ball beyond midfield. Not until the 22nd minute did Maguires record their first score, a point from a Ger Lynch free. Maguires now took control and with many of the players raising their games they put huge pressure on the city backline. The latter showed a lot of indiscipline resorting to fouling which Ger Lynch took full advantage of. Four he pointed to put Maguires ahead by the 29th minute by a point. With another 5 minutes being played by the referee Vincents looked for the equaliser but could not get through a tightly-marking Maguires defence. At the final whistle Maguires were ahead by the narrowest of margins, 2-12 to 3-8. It was a very satisfying victory for the players who had to dig deep when all seemed lost.

SENIOR FOOTBALL
The senior footballers have been very active over the past week playing games against Nemo R and Carbery. They were away to Nemo on Friday evening in the K.S. Despite the fact that both teams were understrength the game was very worthwhile and a good preparation for their championship clash with Piarsaigh. Nemo took the points on a score of 0-9 to 0-7. Of concern to the selectors were the injuries picked up by Donal O’ Sullivan, Micky Farr and Stephen O’ Donovan.
TEAM: Darragh Farr, Conor Collins, Daniel O’ Donovan, Tom Collins, Johnny Collins, Micheal O’ Donovan, Kilian Crowley, Micky Farr, Tim O’ Donovan, Pat Collins, Donal O’ Sullivan, Noel Collins, Stephen O’ Donovan, Denis Healy, Jerry Mc Carthy.
The team played Carbery on Monday evening in Dunmanway. The game had a certain edge to it and at times exchanges became heated which made it very competitive and kept referee Joe Crowley on his toes. Dohenys won by the narrowest of margins, 1-11 to 0-13.
UNDER 14 HURLING
The Under 14 hurlers lost their West Cork and County titles when they were beaten by Bantry in Skibbereen on Sunday evening . Bantry were much stronger than Maguires and had some fine hurlers down the middle. Although only three points separated the sides at the break, 0-5 to 0-2, Bantry were well on top in the second half and were deserving winners on a score of 2-9 to 0-5. Joseph O’ Sullivan had a fine game for Maguires in goal with James Lordan, Brendan Mc Carthy, Donal Rice, Don O’ Driscoll, Keith Daly and Stephen O’ Driscoll also playing well.
