MINOR FOOTBALL

Pride of place this week must go to our u18 minor football team who had a great win over St. Nick's at Bandon on Saturday evening last in the second round of the Premier 2 championship. Though playing with a strong breeze, in the the firsthalf of this game, Sam Maguires found themselves trailing at halftime on the score of  1-06 to 0-04. On the resumption both sides exchanged scores and Maguires struggled to make any impact on the lead. With fifteen minutes remaining St. Nicks had extended the lead to nine points and prospects for Sams looked bleak. However a well worked goal from Donal Rice sparked a major revival for the last quarter and Sams were ahead on the score of 2-10 to 2-09 with five minutes to go.Nick's egualized with time running out and it appeared a draw was going to be the result. However Sams took advantage of the remaining time and when their top scorer Mark Quinn found himself at the end of a  team sweeping movement he put the ball in the net for the all important  score.Nick's had one last attack but Sam's backline stood firm and held out for a memorable victory on the score of 3-10 to 2-10.
