1ST EVER HURLING PARISH LEAGUES - (Number of times read: 1240)

Tuesday 9 May 2017

U8 & U10

The U8 and U10 parish hurling leagues were held on Sunday last May 7th in a sun drenched Sam Maguire Park. This was an historic event as it was the first ever staging of hurling parish leagues. It was a fantastic afternoon of hurling well organised  and a credit to the mentors and players involved.

There were four teams competed in the U10 competition Cork, Tipperary, Galway and Kilkenny . Each team played three games in a round robin competition, with the top two teams contesting the final for the Derry O’ Mahony Memorial Cup.

After some very competitive games Cork captained by Niall Owens and Kilkenny captained by Ogie Walsh qualified for the cup final, with Galway captained by Nathan Mc Carthy and Tipperary captained by Jack Hennigan playing in the plate final.

The Cup final was played at a ferocious pace with some exceptional hurling played by both sides, and at the final whistle only a puck of a ball  separated the sides. Kilkenny came out on top  and the Derry O Mahony Cup was presented for the first time to their captain Ogie Walsh by  Gillian O Mahony, with Maeve, Peter  and Nora O’ Mahony also in attendance. The Sam Maguire club is  very grateful to the O’ Mahony family for donating the cup in memory of former Sam Maguire and Doheny player Derry O’ Mahony.

The plate final was won by Tipperary  after a great tussle with Galway.

Clare and Kilkenny contested the winners final with Clare coming out on top while Tipp and Dublin contested the runners up final with Dublin winning that one.
