A blistering first half display enabled Dohenys to claim the 2017 Carbery
U21AFC title at the expense of Castlehaven in Aughaville on Sunday evening.
The Dunmanway club racked up 2-5 in the opening 30 minutes whilst holding their
opponents scoreless from open play.
A misfiring Castlehaven roared back into contention in the second period but
left themselves with too much to do at the end of a cracking west Cork final.
Dohenys got off to a positive start thanks to Johnny Kelly and Cathal O'Donovan's
midfield dominance. Building on their possession, Bill Murphy and Keith White
floated over two superb scores to hand the Dunmanway club an early two-point
advantage.
Cathal O'Donovan popped up to add another point for a dominant Dohenys prior to
Cork U21 Mark Buckley bisecting the uprights. 0-4 to 0-0 at the end of the
opening quarter and Dohenys were full value for their lead.
Worse was to follow for a Castlehaven side guilty of repeatedly turning over
possession in the final third when Mark Buckley wriggled free of his marker and
fired low past Colm O'Driscoll.
The Haven', struggling to find any rhythm, dropped numerous attempts short and
their frustrations grew when Keith White made it 1-5 to 0-0.
A Conor Cahalane free got his team on the scoreboard just before the interval
but Dohenys put the seal on a marvellous first half performance when Johnny
Kelly capitalised on a defensive lapse to billow the net.
Eight consecutive points from a resurgent Castlehaven saw Conor Cahalane,
Michael Hurley, Cathal Maguire, Conor Nolan and Kevin O'Donovan efforts made it
a four-point game with 10 minutes remaining.
Yet, late Fionn Herlihy and Ray Jennings efforts ensured Dohenys ran out
deserving winners.
