CIT 0 – 10
Dohenys 0 – 7
The
fine weather wasn’t matched by the fare served up in last evening’s County SFC,
Round 2 B encounter at Newcestown. A
game the students deservedly won didn’t really come to life until the closing
stages when CIT belted a chance against the upright when a goal would have gift
wrapped their win and almost paid the price in the dying moments when Dohenys
had opportunities of forcing a draw snuffed out by alert goalkeeping and good
defensive play. At the other end the
winners amassed a total of 15 wides over an hour during which they endured long
spells without scoring including a 20 minute period after they had opened with
the first three points of the game.
Conor
O’Keeffe and Danny Cullotty, from a placed ball and from play, were on target
inside the opening 10 minutes when it was noticeable that the high fielding of
Adam Buckley and the perceptive play of Matthew Bradley were plus factors
against a Doheny outfit shocked by the late withdrawal of Seán Daly. The
loser’s County U-21 player was too ill to start eventhough he was introduced
later in a game where his County colleague Eóin Lavers filled the number 6 slot
more than adequately. However his
absence deprived the losers of a go-to player in midfield but to their credit
Dohenys recovered well after a shaky start.
With late introductions Noel Collins and particulary Pádraig Crowley
getting up to the pace of the game they slowly settled helped also by the
urgings of team captain Barry O’Donovan who drove them on from behind.
Up front
however they rarely troubled a CIT rearguard where Tom O’Sullivan and his
corner men gave little away in a five man Kerry starting defensive set-up. Dohenys did carve out one good opening when a
quickly taken Mark Quinn free released Keith White for a point which was had
the sides level before a converted free from the dangerous Mark Buckley put the
Dunmanway side ahead for the only time in the game, 6 minutes before the
break. All the while a sometimes
over-elaborate CIT were spoiling good approach play with some poor shooting
until the accurate Danny Cullotty tapped over a free, in first half injury time
to tie up the scoring at 4 points apiece.
The students
also resumed positively with a Matthew Bradley point, from his new inside
position, while another Cullotty free and an excellent effort from substitute
Stephen O’Sullivan enabled them to put some daylight between themselves and the
opposition. Mark Buckley and Mark Quinn
brought the losers back into contention before another CIT spurt which included
a splendidly delivered score from a Danny Cullotty sideline kick. It proved to be the scoring highlight for
the winners whose wides tally was now approaching dangerous levels. Unlucky was Stephen O’Sullivan who cracked a
goal-bound effort off the loser’s woodwork with 9 minutes remaining in which
Dohenys fought might and main to salvage something from the game. They almost did when a Barry O’Donovan
delivery broke to Mark Quinn who was foiled by alert CIT ‘keeper Conor
Madden. It subsequently took a splendid
Tom O’Sullivan interception to keep the loser’s at bay in a hectic close to a
game that ended with the spoils going to the better team on the night.
