Cill na Martra  4-10 Dohenys  3 – 9

An absorbing County U-21AFC quarterfinal, at Inchigeelagh last evening was decided by a 60th minute penalty converted by Cill na Martra midfielder Micheál Ó’Deasúna.  Even then a gallant Dohenys didn’t give up but a powerful winner’s outfit held out in injury time after a high-octane encounter.  In the opening stages Dohenys were boosted by an early Fionn Herlihy goal and the Cork U-17 player was denied a second by a good save from the winner’s ‘keeper James Aynsley with the resultant forty-five converted by Mark Buckley who then kicked over two frees.

It was looking good for the Dunmanway lads until the 22nd minute when Micheál Ó’Deasúna, spending a little time on the edge of the square after picking up an injury, slipped home his sides first goal. Undaunted the loser’s came again with the lively Keith White pointing before Fionn Herlihy burst through for a second goal at a stage Cathal O’Donovan, Johnny Kelly and Tom Murphy, along with the aforementioned were to the forefront.  Leading on a 2-7 to 1-5 scoreline at the break the losers were rocked by early second half goals from Dean Mac Cárthaigh and substitute Seán Ó’Croinín, (with his first touch).  With Antóin O’Cuama now excelling, after switching to centre back and Ó’Deasúna along with Daniel Ó’Duinnín showing well the winner’s power play threatened to overrun a Dohenys side but once again James Aynsley had to come to his sides rescue to deny Fionn Herlihy.

Their ‘keeper’s heroics were vital in a closely contested game where a third Doheny’s goal, following a flowing movement from ‘keeper Darragh McCarthy to full forward Mark Buckley, eased them back into a 3 point lead entering the last quarter.  During this period the winner’s upped another gear against a youthful, but tiring losers who were finally despatched by the Mid Cork side’s penalty conversion from the outstanding Micheál Ó’Deasúna.
