Dohenys   2 – 8 Castlehaven 0 – 9

A mixture of emotion and relief greeted this Doheny victory in last evening’s Clóna Milk sponsored Carbery U-21 AFC final in Aughaville.  The relief came in their ending of a 17 year drought in this championship while the nostalgia was served up after the game when the winning captain Eóin Lavers, a grandnephew of Liam Farr whose name this trophy commemorates, received the Cup.  The game itself was one of two halves with Dohenys serving up a virtually flawless opening 30 minutes.  At the break the winners were 2-5 to 0-1 ahead but the expected Haven revival materialised after the resumption only for Dohenys to pick off a trio of invaluable points in their time of crisis.     With Johnny Kelly excelling in midfield and their defence as tight as a drum it was all Dohenys early on with a point from the outstanding Bill Murphy starting the cavalcade. Then Mark Buckley, beaten to a few early balls by sterling Haven fullback Ronan Walsh, cut loose to first score a point followed immediately by his 21st minute goal.  This was far from a three man show however as Seán Daly was keeping a close eye on Michael Hurley in a Haven attack that uncharacteristically kicked a few deliveries into the safe hands of Doheny custodian Darragh McCarthy.

Up front Keith White proved to be a will of the wisp attacker with a brace of points before setting up Johnny Kelly who coolly scored their second goal just before a Conor Cahalane free served up the only Haven score a minute from halftime.  Cahalane, although hobbling proved to be a major player in the Haven revival after the resumption with David Whelton, Patrick Bohane, Conor Nolan and Ronan Walsh other key players.  They shook off their opening half shackles and a succession of points ended with Cathal Maguire making it a four point game in the 48th minute.  A mighty Fionn Herlihy point settled the winners who had substitute Ray Jennings also on target to finally kill off a vibrant Haven revival.
