Dohenys 4 – 13 Newcestown 0 – 7
At Enniskeane last evening Dohenys did what they had to do to ease a
step forward in the County U-21 AFC. Although the Carbery champions failed to
reach any great heights their ability to strike for goals was a facility the
losers simply hadn’t in their repertoire. The Dunmanway side overcame midfield problems
to supply a sharp attack that had Cork U-17 player Fionn Herlihy, beginning an
excellent individual display, by waltzing
through for their first goal in the 3rd minute.
Before Herlihy was to repeat this feat in the closing half Dohenys
had added a further two majors to their collection with young Rhys Coakley
serving up their second in the 10th minute. This was the result of some excellent team work
seldom on display against a committed Newcestown outfit containing some fine
individual players. Midfielder Seán
O’Donovan lorded the midfield exchanges while Gearóid O’Donovan carried the
ball well but with Dohenys Eóin Lavers dominating at centre back the supply was
too often cut off to a loser’s attack where Cian Healy was their go-to
man. At times Newcestown were prone to open
up in the face of some impressive Doheny build-up play in which Keith White
played a major role. White’s 21st minute goal was a just reward for
a fine display in a contest where the winners retired with a 3-5 to 0-4
halftime advantage.
Before the loser’s had added to their interval lead, with a 43rd
minute Colm Dineen score, Dohenys had restarted with a quartet of points from
Mark Buckley and one from Keith White. Then
Nathan O’Donovan and Rhys Coakley clicked before sending Fionn Herlihy through
for a trade-mark goal. Now 4-12 to 0-6
clear Dohenys had their minds focused on their next assignment against Cill na
Martra, conquerors of Nemo Rangers for which the Dunmanway lads will need to
show a significant improvement if they hope to continue the dream.
