Dohenys 0-7 CIT 0-10
The
Senior Footballers were in championship action on Monday night in Newcestown
where they took on CIT.
It
was CIT who raced into an early 3 point lead after Dohenys had
missed a few oppurtunities of their own. However our lads settled and
played their way back into the game and deservedly led by 0-4 to 0-3 after 25
minutes. The sores coming from Mark Buckley (3) and Keith White(1) however CIT
had the last score of the half to leave the teams all square at half time. A
small bit more efficiency and composure in scoring positions would have seen
Dohenys in an even better position at the short whistle.
A
good start to the 2nd half was vital, however much like the 1st
half it was the students who grabbed the initiative and opened up a 3 pt lead
and Dohenys were playing catch up thereafter. The intensity of their 1st
half efforts combined with the humid conditions seemed to take their toll.
However great credit is due to our lads as they hung in there and with 6
mins to go the goal opportunity we had been waiting for came. Barry O’Donovan’s
delivery towards Mark Buckley was half-cleared and the ball fell to
Mark Quinn but the CIT stopper somehow managed to block his
shot. Brendan Mc Carthy added an injury time point to reduce to deficit to
3 again but alas that goal we needed proved to be elusive.
The
1st half performance was encouraging, however fatigue and the loss
of Cork U21 Sean Daly just prior to throw in, combined with the loss of
Jerry McCarthy and Donal Rice through injury made victory a bridge too
far on this occasion. Time to regroup now as we will be in the all too familiar
relegation play offs .
