Irene Mawe | Tuesday 10 July 2012

The Doheny Ladies Football team emerged victorious over a strong Glanmire side in the first round of the County Championship in Glanmire on Friday night. In wet conditions the girls battled bravely to hang onto a two point lead to ensure them a place in the next round.

With coach Mark Farr’s first championship game in charge of the side, it was encouraging to see such at good performance and the girls need to stay focused and committed now for the next round. Dohenys were 1-5 to 5 points in the lead at the half time whistle, and put their all into the second half to maintain that lead.

Keeper Niamh O’Donovan made some tremendous saves to keep Glanmire at bay, while in defence Claire Hurley and Claire Walsh showed their strength alongside talented u16 player Melissa Duggan, who is one to watch for the future. Catriona Moloney pointed some lovely scores up front and all the forwards worked really hard to ensure Dohenys ran out winners on a scoreline of 2-7 to 0-11.

This is lovely team combined with youth and experience and we wish them all the best in the next round.
