DOHENY GAA NOTES - (Number of times read: 1266)

PRO | Tuesday 8 April 2014

The Doheny GAA Club were very busy on the playing front over the last week. On Wednesday evening last the Junior A Footballers had a good win over a strong O’Donovan Rossa team winning on a score-line of 1-09 to 1-06 in Sam Maguire Park.  A strong first half performance by the home side was the corner stone for this much deserved win.  The Dohenys lead at half-time 0-06 to 0-02.  Skibb came thundering back into the game in the third quarter but the Dohenys finished the stronger to win by 3 points.  Defensively the team was excellent on the night.  Denis Healy gave an eye catching performance from mid-field with a tally of 1-02 and Brian McCarthy chipped in with 0-03 from centre forward.   This is the Junior A’s third win in the league and they now sit on top of the Junior A League (Section 2) after 4 games played. Team: Darragh Farr, James McCarthy, Kevin Cotter, Killian Crowley, Johnny Collins, Paul Deane, Tadhg O'Leary, Denis Healy 1-02, Niall Hurley, Dan McSweeney 0-01, Brian McCarthy 0-03, Noel Collins, Jermey Maloney, Mickey Farr 0-01, Ger Kelly 0-01. Subs: Alan Ring, James McSweeney John Healy 0-01, Dave O'Brien & David Deane

On Friday evening last the Sam Maguire Minor Footballers had a good win over Kilmeen in the Minor Championship on a score-line of 2-07 to 0-09.  Kilmeen raced to a 4 point lead early on but a goal from Podge Crowley after good approach play by Darragh McCarthy settled the team and brought the Sam Maguire Minors right back into the thick of things.  A second goal by Jack O’Connor shortly afterwards catapulted the minors into the lead, a lead they never relinquished from that moment on.  The minors had a 2 point half time lead which was very encouraging because they had played against a stiff breeze in the first half.  Upon the resumption the men in green, with the wind to their backs, took control of the game and really kicked on scoring five unanswered points to race to a seven point lead.  Credit to Kilmeen they never threw in the towel and pressed hard to reduce the deficit but they couldn’t get the all important goal they were looking for.  The Sam Maguire’s ran out deserved victors in the end. Team: Paul O’Mahony, Darragh McCarthy, Sean Daly, Tom Murphy, Shane Crowley, Eoin Lavers, Padraig O’Mahony, Johnny Kelly, Jamie Carroll, Eoin Murray, Liam Rice, Ray Jennings, Jack O’Connor, Cathal O’Donovan, Podge Crowley, Subs: Aidan O’Donovan, Gareth Crowley and Oisin O’Donovan.

Also on Friday evening the Club hosted the West Cork U21 Final which Clonakilty comprehensively won on a scoreline of 0-14 to Castlehavens 3 points.  This game was preceded by the final of the Dr. Michael Herlihy Cup which was won by Hamilton High of Bandon, beating  Mount St, Michael of Rosscarbery on a score-line of 3-14 to 0-08.  Hamilton High was captained by our very own Fionn Herlihy, grandson of the late Dr. Michael Herlihy, who graciously and fittingly accepted the inaugural cup.

The reigning West Cork Junior A Hurling Champions got their league campaign under way on Saturday evening last against O’Donovan Rossa in Rossa Park.  The game ended in a draw 1-05 apiece.  Conditions were atrocious, after the heavy rain all day, so the pitch wasn’t conducive to fast free flowing hurling.  The game was a dogged affair right through with scores at a premium.  The game was level at half time 0-04 to 1-01 and likewise the teams couldn’t be separated either at the full-time whistle.  Team: Vicent Healy, David Collins, Tom Collins, Ross Crowley, Chris Cronin, Jerry McCarthy, Noel Collins, Donal Rice, Alan Sheehan, Brian McCarthy, Patrick McCarthy, Brendan McCarthy, Barry O’Donovan, Niall Hurley, John Healy Subs: Maurice Murhpy & Don O’Driscoll.  The Junior Hurlers will be in action this Friday night in the opening round of the  County League at home to Ballinora at 7.45pm.

The Senior Footballers beat Beara in a challenge game on Sunday afternoon last.  The seniors were slow out of the blocks and trailed at half time on a score-line of 0-07 to 0-03.  However a much rejuvenated Doheny’s team took to the field in the 2nd half, nullifying Beara’s 4 point advantage within the opening 10 minutes before running out comfortable winners in the end on a score-line of 1-12 to 0-09. Team: Darren Kelly, Donal Rice, Niall Hurley, Barry O’Donovan 0-01, Maurice Murphy 0-01, Alan Sheehan, Tom Collins, David Collins 0-02, Pat Collins, Declan O’Dwyer, Patrick McCarthy 0-01, Jerry McCarthy, Brian McCarthy 0-02, Daniel O’Donovan 0-01, Mark Quinn 1-03. Subs: Eoin Lavers 0-01, Johnny Kelly, Daniel McSweeney.

Third level involvement:
Congratulations to John Crowley who won a Fresher’s 2 All-Ireland Football medal playing in goal with UL.  It should also be noted that Brendan McCarthy captained CIT Fresher’s 2 team who were narrowly beaten in the All-Ireland hurling final.  John Forbes and Ross Crowley both captained UCD Freshers 2 hurling and football teams respectively this year.  It’s great to see our Club players heavily involved in & exerting their influence over teams in Third level football/hurling.
