DOHENY GAA NOTES - (Number of times read: 1007)

Daniel O Donovan | Tuesday 25 February 2014

The Senior Football team lost to Valley Rovers on a score-line of 0-13 to 1-06 in Brinny on Sunday morning last in Division 2 of the league. Credit to Valley Rovers they totally outplayed the Seniors, particularly in the 2nd half, kicking 8 points against a strong breeze.  Dohenys would have to be satisfied at half time trailing only by 2 points on a score-line of 0-05 to 0-03 having played a against a stiff wind.  However it was the home side that kicked on in the 2nd half leaving the Dohenys very flat footed.  A goal deep in injury time by full forward Daniel O’Donovan only managed to put respectability on the score-line.  The Seniors will have to take lessons from this performance & knuckle down in training for the coming weeks. Team: Darren Kelly, Barry O’Donovan, Niall Hurley, Donal Rice, Tom Colllins, Alan Sheehan 0-02 (1f, 1( 45)), Killian Crowley, Pat Colllins 0-01, David Collins, Decy O’Dwyer, Patrick McCarthy, Eoin Lavers 0-01, Sean Daly 0-01, Daniel O’Donovan 1-00, Ross Crowley. Subs Used: Daniel McSweeney 0-01, Tadhg O’Leary

The Junior A Footballers have got their league campaign off to a flier with 2 wins from 2.  The Junior A team defeated near neighbours Clann na Gael on a scoreline of 1-12 to 1-10 in Sam Maguire Park last week and on Saturday evening last the Juniors convincingly defeated Bantry Blues on a score-line of 2-08 to 0-02 also in Sam Maguire Park.  The Clann na Gael match was an extremely competitive match right through but a strong finish by the home side secured the win for the Dohenys.  Team: Kieran Farr, James McCarthy, Niall Hurley, Kevin Cotter, Killian Crowley, Paul Deane, Johnny Collins, Denis Healy 0-02, Eoin Lavers, Daniel McSweeney, Brian McCarthy 1-04, Jamie Carroll 0-02, Noel Collins, Ger Kelly 0-01, James McSweeney, Subs Used: Johnny Hurley, Jack O’Connor, Mickey Farr, Johnny Kelly 0-01, Cathal O’Donovan, Podge Crowley 0-1

In appalling weather conditions on Saturday night the Juniors ran out compelling victors over Bantry Blues.  It was a dominate display by the home side.  Unfortunately a Bantry player suffered a serious leg injury and the Doheny GAA Club would like to wish him all the best with his recover.  Team: John Crowley, James McCarthy, Kevin Cotter, Killian Crowley, Johnny Collins, Tadhg O’Leary, Keith Daly 0-01, Denis Healy 0-03, Ross Crowley 0-01, Daniel McSweeney, Brendan McCarthy 0-01, Noel Collins 0-01, John Healy 1-01, Ger Kelly, James McSweeney. Subs Used: Mickey Farr, David Deane, Podge Crowley 1-00.  What’s extremely encouraging for the Club is that 27 players were used over the 2 matches.  The Junior team should be used as a spring board onto the Senior team particularly for the younger players.

The U21 A Footballers continue their preparations for their upcoming U21 Championship match on March 9th with a number of challenge matches over the last week.  The U21 team lost to Rosscarbery on a scoreline of 4-06 to 0-10 and on Friday last they beat Kilmeen on a score-line of 2-14 to 0-07.  Every player is getting a lot of game time and competition for places on the championship team is high.  The U21 team will be in action again this coming weekend.
