West Cork U21 Championship:
The Doheny U21A footballers booked their place in the 2017
west cork final with a comprehensive victory over Clonakilty, winning on a
score-line of 2-11 to 0-10 & now they await the winners of Castlehaven
& Newcestown. This was a fantastic team/panel performance as the
starting fifteen & the 4 substitutes that were introduced all played out of
their skin & the Dunmanway men thoroughly deserved this victory.
On reflection the game was won in a 10 minute spell before
half time when the Dohenys got 1-04 without reply. It was nip & tuck
at the start. Dohenys started brightly kicking the opening 2 scores
through Aidan O’Donovan & Nathan O’Donovan. Clonakilty, who were
physically imposing around the middle third, replied with 3 points in quick
succession. Mark Buckley, who ended up scoring 1-07 on the evening, began
to exert his influence on the game by scoring 2 points. Clonakilty level
matters on the 19th minute leaving the score-line 4 points
apiece. The game was turned on its head when Cork U17 player Fionn
Herlihy bellowed the back of the net for Dohenys men. Dohenys too started
to gain parity around the midfield. Herlihy was very unlucky not to get a
second goal minutes later when he saw his blistering effort come back off the
crossbar. Dohenys added a further 4 unanswered points through Buckley
& the lively Keith White who like Buckley caused endless problems for the
Clonakilty defence with his movement & pace. Dohenys led at the
interval 1-08 to 0-04.
Clonakilty got the opening score of the 2nd half.
However moments later the lively Doheny’s corner forward Nathan O’Donovan
was upended in the Clonakilty penalty box & Dohenys were awarded a spot
kick. Buckley coolly slotted the penalty home to extend Dohenys advantage
to 9 points. Clonakilty tried hard to get back into the game but they met
a resilient Dohenys defence who weren’t willing to cough up any soft
goal. Jerry O’Farrell & Sean Daly were to the fore in the Dohenys
defence but the entire Doheny backline as a whole played superbly. Eoin
Lavers gave a captains display at centre back & in particularly when he was
moved into midfield. As Clonakilty pushed forward they left gaping holes
in their defence which the Dohenys forwards & in particular the lethal Mark
Buckley exploited. Dohenys ran out deserved victors in the end.
The Club hasn’t been represented in the U21 A final since
2003 when they were narrowly defeated by O’Donovan Rossa in Aughaville & it
goes back to the year of the millennium, 2000, since the Club last won the Liam
Farr trophy.
Senior Championship Action:
The Doheny senior footballers are in championship action
this weekend. The seniors face Aghada in the preliminary round in Ovens
on Saturday 15th at 6pm. The last time the two clubs met (in
2015) in the senior championship Dohenys won. Here’s hoping for more of
the same. Dohenys league form has improved in 2017. They have
played 4 leagues to date, winning two, drawing one & losing one. They
are sitting just above mid table in division 3 of the league standings.
Preparations have been hampered somewhat in recent weeks with a number of
players involved in the Cork U21s & the Clubs continuing success at U21
level. However in a way this is a good complaint & hopefully the
senior footballers can feed of the success of the U21 club players &
register a championship win of their own.
The Club would like to thank our main sponsor Martin Maybury
of Clona Coaches & the Parkway Hotel who very kindly sponsored training
gear for the Doheny players.
