Junior Hurling Championship ends in stalemate:
The Doheny Junior A Hurlers lost to St. Marys on a score
line of 0-14 to 1-15 in their 1st round Junior A championship replay
in Balllinacarriga on Sunday morning last. The game hinged on two goal
opportunities, one converted & one missed. The game was level on no
fewer than 8 occasions until the final quarter when a mix up in the Doheny’s
defence allowed a speculative shot from distance dribbled in over the goal line
to give St. Mary’s a 3 point lead. Dohenys regrouped
admirably & responded with a point to narrow the gap to two. The
defining moment in the game came when Doheny’s wing forward Brendan McCarthy
was hauled to the deck when bearing down on the St. Mary’s goal & a penalty
was awarded. Unfortunately the Doheny’s penalty effort was dragged
wide. St. Mary’s finished strongly scoring two further points to run out
victors on the day. As a spectacle the replay was of a far higher quality
both in hurling terms & intensity level to the drawn match. The
Doheny hurlers may have to take the scenic route in the Junior A hurling
championship but every match under their belt will only improve the team going
forward & there’s still a number of players to come back into the fold.
Sciath Na Scol
The Doheny GAA Club successfully hosted the Sciath Na Scol
finals last Thursday. Sam Maguire Park was a hive of activity with
hundreds of kids partaking in the competition. The organizers were
blessed with the weather & both pitches were in immaculate condition.
Congratulations to all involved.
